The growing use of composite materials across diverse industrial sectors has created the need for 5-axis CNC machining centers that combine high productivity with exceptional precision, reduce part handling times, and ensure operator safety. To meet these objectives, Self Group Comi engineers optimized the configuration of a new CNC center under the TechMill brand, called LaborMac.
To achieve maximum rigidity, a monoblock structure with a Gantry-type movable portal on the Y-axis was adopted, significantly reducing vibrations and enabling excellent surface finishes even at high speeds. For milling composite parts requiring the utmost precision, TechMill promotes the use of advanced measurement systems, such as inductive linear scales on linear axes and direct encoders on rotary axes.
At the core of every CNC center, TechMill designs its own milling heads in-house, equipped with electro-spindles sized according to the material, part dimensions, and geometry. LaborMac features an aluminum 2-axis continuously interpolated head that transmits movements of the rotating axes (A and C) via servo motors connected to high-precision reducers and absolute encoder measurement systems. To optimize performance on composite materials, a 15 kW (S1) electro-spindle with 12 Nm torque capable of reaching 24,000 RPM is used, equipped with four high-precision ceramic bearings.
Large pneumatically operated doors provide easy access to the worktable, where axis travel allows milling of parts up to 2000 x 1000 mm with a height of 750 mm.
For unmanned operation, TechMill developed a palletized rotary table system that allows loading and preparation of a new part outside the machine without stopping the process.
Special attention is also given to part clamping, with modern fixtures developed to secure complex-shaped components quickly and effectively.
Increasing emphasis on operator safety has led companies to request systems for containing and extracting dust and machining debris. The modern retractable bellows cover significantly reduces the escape of fumes, dust, carbon/glass fiber chips, composite materials, and vaporized coolant from the work area, while maintaining adequate interior lighting.
Equipping the machining center with systems for dust conveyance, extraction, and filtration ensures a high level of individual protection for operators against harmful powders and explosive risk.
